I got married in my backyard many moons ago, and since that time I’ve been incredibly fortunate to photograph loads of other backyard weddings in and around Adelaide. Last year I shot a small backyard wedding on a 44 degree day – the groom’s family had all come directly from a UK winter and they just about melted. The year before that, I shot this majestic event at a home that sold a few months later for over $12m (!). Back in 2022, I photographed this wedding in the backyard of the bride’s parents’ house in Cherry Gardens, and when I say “backyard”, I really mean “expansive hills property complete with a lake, a few fields, and rolling grass hills ideal for frolicking”.
But there’s one thing S & B’s wedding had that none of the others did – an onsite afterparty in a network of underground tunnels with the DJ pumping vintage tunes with an old school boiler room vibe. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like it. Guard of honour at the end of the night to bid the brides farewell, but instead of making their exit they led the charge to the boiler room for the real party!
Here’s something else that was different and beautiful – rather than making a grand entrance to get the ceremony underway, S & B chose to arrive before their guests in order to serve them drinks on their arrival, what a beautiful way to connect with everyone right from the start! The entire day was just so relaxed, informal, warm and beautiful, and the connection between S & B was something to behold (the pictures tell the story better than my words ever could).
Thank you so much for having me on board, this was one of the most memorable weddings from my 18 years in the game, somehow you made a wedding with 150 guests feel intimate ❤️
