As country as it gets

FILED IN: Personal

When my girlfriend lived in Victor Harbor she always wanted to go to the Compass Cup, but fate stood in the way. This year nothing would stand in our way, not the Tour Down Under which we had to divert around, not the stifling heat of an Australian summer’s day and not the fact that I was shooting some photos at Woodstock Winery later that afternoon. In fact the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, Woodstock and Mt Compass are only 20 minutes away so I was going to be down that way anyway.

The Compass Cup is billed as “Australia’s Only Cow Race” but racing cows is only the tip of the hay bale. It includes such events as the Ute Muster, Dung Fling, Tour Down Udder, Milk Loading Race, Rubber Boot Marathon and Milk Skull Off (which should probably be renamed “Milk Skull Off and Subsequent Milk Vomit Off”).

Unfortunately we weren’t able to hang around for the main event, and we were both devastated to miss the dung flight by a few minutes, but the various milk races and rubber boot cycling themed events were a great laugh.

Word to the wise, if you’re a bit squeamish you might want to skip photo 6.
