How I made $20,000 in 24 hours

FILED IN: Awards, Personal, Travel

Yes, you read that right, this week’s blog is all about how I made $20,000 in just 24 hours!!

Two words people – Photo Competitions.

Okay, to clarify, I haven’t technically made my $20,000 just yet, but after the weekend’s activities I think it’s safe to start spending my winnings. You see, a few weeks ago I found about the Art Of Nature photo competition, it’s an annual event run by the South Australian government with a total prize purse of $10,000 spread over 5 categories (I’m working on the assumption that I’ll probably win every category). The photos must be taken within one of South Australia’s beautiful national parks, and on Sunday I made my out to the Hale Conservation Park which is about 20 minutes south of the Barossa Valley to begin the process of earning my stripes (and a truck load of cash). The Internet suggested I may find echidnas in said national park if I was lucky, unfortunately I was unlucky, but that’s probably good news for the other entrants as a photograph of Australia’s spikiest marsupial would have been guaranteed me first prize, now the door is ever so slightly ajar.

As luck would have it I really only managed to take photos that will fit one category, plants, probably the least exciting of all the five, but that’s alright, the competition closes July 23 so I’ve still got some time to win the other categories.

I thought this would be a great scene for some wedding photos, it’s only about an hour walk from the car park so if any couples feel like going for a hike on your wedding day let me know.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking – now Simon, I agree that you’ve already got your clammy little hands on that $10,000, but you said you made $20,000 in 24 hours, what gives?

Good question. It seems that there’s more than one photo competition taking place right about now, and cat lovers Australia wide (apparently over 300,000 of them!) have been sending photos of their cats into Whiskers to win another $10,000. I happened to take a few photos of a particularly attractive 16 year old on the weekend which will almost certainly see my name inscribed in the Whiskers trophy.

Game on.

All jokes aside, photo competitions are always good fun to enter and give you a reason to get out and take photos, even though they invariably end with me complaining to anyone within earshot why my entry was better than the winner. If any Adelaidians are looking for something to do this weekend why not grab your camera and head to a national park to see what you can come up with.

Which photos do you think I should enter for each competition?
